Study Abroad for Students of Chinese

SMU-in-China

June 22-August 14, 2009

Overview

The SMU-in-China program is 8-week summer program designed for native English speakers who are intermediate students of Chinese and wish to take their language skills to the next level in a short period of time.

Beijing, the culture and political center of China, is a 3000-year-old city that has been the national capital for most of the past 600 years. Among the historical riches students may experience are the Great Wall, the Forbidden City, the Summer Palace, and Beijing opera theatres. This program provides students with full linguistic and cultural immersion.

The SMU-in China summer program gives Chinese students the opportunity to explore this richly historic city while participating in intensive language instruction. The program offers two contiguous intensive language courses in modern Chinese at the intermediate level.

Students have four hours of class in the morning, with two hours of instruction and two hours of drill. Once a week, students have an individual session with one of the teachers. The rest of the afternoons are left open for study and extracurricular activities in Chinese. There is a quiz every Friday morning. On the weekends, there are performances and trips to historic sites in and outside Beijing. In addition, students are encouraged to take lessons in Chinese art, such as taiji, martial arts, calligraphy and Chinese music.

Host University

The host university, Beijing Normal University, recognized widely for its strong faculty, has been home of various college summer language programs for the past decade. The university staff has rich experience in teaching Chinese to American college students and in organizing weekend excursions and cultural activities. Beijing Normal University is located in the northwestern part of Beijing, between the second and the third ring roads, with convenient access to all parts of the city via subway, public buses and taxis.
