Students who have had at least two years of French instruction in high
school within the past two years, or who have acquired French language
skills in some other manner, are required to take a placement examination if
they wish to continue their language study. (If the period of time which
has elapsed since the language was previously studied is longer than two
years, the test is not mandatory.) After a student has been placed into a
French course and has completed the course with a grade of C or higher, s/he
may request up to 12 hours of retroactive credit for the preceding courses
in the beginning and intermediate sequence.
Native speakers should contact Professor Beauchamp for placement
bbeaucha@smu.edu.
The French placement exam may be taken online at any time and from any
location from the link below.
Please note that you will need to register for
the exam by creating an account.
The fee for the examination is a non-refundable $40.00, payable only before
the exam. Exams may be paid for with a Visa, MasterCard or Discover credit
card. After entering your credit card information for payment, you must take
the test and cannot postpone it to a later date. To take the test at a later
date, you will need to pay the $40 fee again. Please note that students will
not be permitted to take the test more than once in the same language except
with special permission of the Department. Upon completion of the exam
please print your results and give a copy to your adviser.
Any problems taking the exam should be addressed to Elise Pflum, Director of
the Foreign Language Teaching and Technology Center (
eapflum@smu.edu).
If you do not have a credit or debit card to use for the exam, you may
contact Dr. Pflum and make an appointment to take the exam in the Foreign
Language Teaching and Technology Center in 234 Clements and pay her with a
check made out to SMU or with $40 cash.
