Students who have had at least two years of Latin instruction in high school
within the past two years, or who have acquired Latin language skills in
some other manner, are required to take a placement examination if they wish
to continue their language study. (If the period of time which has elapsed
since the language was previously studied is longer than two years, the test
is not mandatory.) After a student has been placed into a Latin course and
has completed the course with a grade of C or higher, s/he may request up to
12 hours of retroactive credit for the preceding courses in the beginning
and intermediate sequence. Paperwork to this effect is available in the main
office of Foreign Languages and Literatures which is located in 309 Clements
Hall.
The exam is not yet available online. Please contact
eapflum@smu.edu to schedule a time to
take the exam. The fee for the examination is a non-refundable $40.00,
payable only before the exam via 1) check made out to "SMU" or 2) cash.
Please note that students will not be permitted to take the test more than
once in the same language. Upon completion of the exam you will be given a
letter certifying your scores which student give to their adviser for
registration purposes.
