Majors and minors are encouraged to explore Hispanic culture first-hand
through participation in the SMU-in-Spain and/or the Xalapa, Mexico
programs, or some other university-level Spanish program abroad. Many
Spanish majors and minors spend a semester or year abroad with the
SMU-in-Spain program or another Hispanic program abroad.
Nestled high in the Sierra Madre Oriental mountain range, Xalapa
provides a spectacular setting for a summer language program. This six-week
program offers an intensive exposure to the Spanish language and culture of
Mexico. Program participants live with local families and attend classes on
the campus of the Universidad Veracruzana.

SMU in Spain:
The first of the study abroad programs, SMU-in-Spain, was established in 1969. Located in Madrid, this program is based at the Fundación José Ortega y Gasset, a highly regarded Spanish academic institution. The Fundación has premises in Madrid, the vast, predominantly modern and bustling capital of Spain, and Toledo, the ancient Visigoth capital and one of Spain's splendid old-walled cities.
At the beginning of the program, students spend several days at the Fundacións Toledo campus, located in the converted XVIth century convent of San Juan de la Penitencia, where there is an orientation to the program and to life in Spain. Students then return to the Fundación's Madrid campus where they begin their classes. Course offerings are in art history, business administration, cultural formations, history, political science, religion, and advanced level Spanish. Students live with families, thus allowing participants the opportunity to enjoy a firsthand exposure to the language, people, and culture of Spain.
